Boredom

It's hard to imagine getting bored in medical school. Generally, I don't have time for it. Last semester, between a full course load including Physiology, Neuroscience, and Immunology, running two review groups a week for the term 1 students behind me, participating in an elective course on ultrasound technique, and starting a relationship, there was no time to procrastinate. Study time was serious, even if unfocused. Now, I find myself bored. I admit this hesitantly because I know in about 10 days, when term 4 begins, I will have no problem with boredom. I will long for the days when I took naps and slept before midnight. This schedule reminds me of my undergrad days.

It has been recently suggested to me that I get a project. I think this is a great idea. For now, my project will be to blog more often, but I am also trying to get myself to the gym more regularly and get involved with our SOM's branch of Physicians for Human Rights advocating for sustainable energy solutions on campus. We'll see how the projects go!

  1. I like line 4! I think you're on the right path. Try to enjoy your free time and remember that you will be freakishly busy in NO TIME! Do anything you want to do now, explore the island, go to the beach, read a book, talk to the person your in a relationship with ;) and have FUN!!! Also...You could make a plan of how you want to tackle this semester. If you're a TOTAL loser, you could pre-read for the semester.
Whatever you do remember to stay calm and DON'T freak out!!! Lindsay and I were JUST talking about this today: We are so influenced by our peers, especially those above us...I thought biochem was going to KILL me because everyone in 2nd term was saying how hard it was...I found a way to like it and study it and it turns out...not so bad! Same with Parasitology (only reverse), I initially thought "Oh God...how am I going to get into this?!?!" but everyone told me how cool it was and how awesome the professor/class/material was that I got excited and WANTED to learn it....made it a LOT easier...still hard, but totally doable!
You KNOW you're going to like Pathology, because 1) it's EXACTLY what we're here for, b) you are going to be SOOOOOO interested in it, c) you are going to ROCK THE SHIT out of it (sorry, I'm studying Parasitology right now, so I've only got one thing on my mind), and 4) c will reinforce b!!!!!
In other news: You are GREAT and you're a champ and you're AWESOME and you can TOTALLY DO THIS!!!!!!!! If you need anything...I'm here!!!

  2. Thanks for the encouragement, Ashley. Of course you like line 4 :P

You mentioned what I think will be the best part about Path - that it is finally what we are here for, so I am excited to get into it! This week will fly by and then I'll be posting "Oh no, so much work to do!!" Remember you're in a good semester too, Physio and Neuro especially are really interesting. Immuno is crazy, in that, it's so hard to imagine tiny little cells and tiny little ligands on cells have such a big influence in our lives - and we never even know it's happening! So in that sense it's amazing.
